Small Changes, Big Impact in Our Primary Bedroom

Making small design changes in a room can significantly transform its overall look and feel. Simple updates, like switching out throw pillows, adding a new lamp, or incorporating new artwork can breathe new life into the space without the need for a complete overhaul.
I recently had the itch to make a few little updates like that in our primary bedroom. Some of our bedding was feeling worn out and a big, blank wall had been staring me in the face just begging me to fill it. It was time! I shopped my house for a few pieces and then made a few strategic purchases from Wayfair to bring it all together. The result? A totally fresh look and feel without buying any significant new furniture! Sometimes that’s all you need to help you feel good about a room - no complete overhaul needed.
I only purchased three new pieces here. If you’ve been around Mix & Match Design Co. for awhile and have caught glimpses of my bedroom, maybe you can guess what they are! Also, be sure to scroll on down all the way to the end where I’ll include links to pieces so you can get the look of my bedroom if you’d like to bring a taste of it into your own home.
Just to give you an idea of what it looked like before, here it is from a couple of years ago:
I liked it, but as I mentioned, things were feeling a little tired and I wanted to love our bedroom. My husband and I work from home and walk through our bedroom to our offices every day, so it’s a space we’re in a LOT - not just for sleeping!
So what were the three new pieces I purchased to freshen up this space? They were: a new set of shams, two accent pillows, and a set of six gallery wall frames. That’s it! I also gathered a few other pieces from around the house and now it looks like this!
I just love how calm and fresh it feels. It’s amazing how just changing up some of the bedding can make such a big difference. The pair of quilted white Euro shams and 22” plaid accent pillows from the Chris Loves Julia x Loloi line (I’d been dying to check out their pillow collection since it was released!) are both great quality at a nice price point.
{Designer tip: for the 22” pillows, be sure to size up to a 24” insert to give them a nice, full appearance.}
Coincidentally, we also purchased our bed from Wayfair about five years ago and it’s still going strong. It’s hard to go wrong with a classic upholstered wingback bed! It’s available in a ton of fabrics, so if you’re in the market, I would definitely put this one on your list. It fits in with just about any style, including the “cozy modern” look we have going on in here.
Then we turn to the big wall to the left and breathe a big sigh of relief because it’s no longer empty! It’s now filled with this lovely grid gallery wall of family photos!
I’ve been wanting to add more photos to different spots in our home and this wall was just begging for it. I found an amazing set of six gallery frames with oversized mats from Wayfair that fit the bill perfectly. They came in several finish options and mat sizes, and I opted for the maple frame as a soft, warm contrast with our white walls. When I pulled them out of the box, I was very impressed with how solid they were. I chose a 5x7 picture opening, which was just right. This is just my personal preference, but I generally don’t like to hang giant family photos. I do like the frames to have a nice visual presence though, so the oversized mats allow for a large frame with a smaller photo inside.
I really love where I landed with this room and I know we’ll be enjoying it for a long time to come - especially this fall season! Picking up a few new pieces from Wayfair was all I needed - it truly has something for everyone in every style to bring that idea of a perfect room to life.
My hope is that you’ll leave today’s post feeling inspired to make those minor tweaks in different spaces and maybe even find a few pieces you love to bring into your own home!
