Sure-Fire Bed + Nightstand Combos
As I mentioned at the end of last week’s post, I’m back with some stellar bed and nightstand combinations! My hope is that seeing these and understanding the factors that went into pairing them will help you in the search for the right ones for your bedroom. Below you’ll find six pairings to offer some good variety - three sets with upholstered beds and three with wood beds. Note that I chose queen beds here, but a lot of the wider nightstands will work for a king too.
Now remember - there are several factors to consider when you’re selecting the right nightstands for your bed. I’m not going to rehash them all here, but don’t miss the Ultimate Guide for Choosing the Right Nightstands for more on that!
In general though, a major key to choosing a successful combination is making sure you’re taking the height of your mattress into account when you’re looking for the right nightstands. If you’re shopping for a both at the same time, this becomes a little trickier than just measuring your existing mattress height, right?
You’ll usually need to do a little digging (and some math!) to figure out that total height before you can shop for your nightstands. Depending on whether you’re looking at a platform bed or one that requires a boxspring, the math will look slightly different. Here’s how I calculate it:
Total height = height of platform slats + mattress height
OR
Total height = height of base frame + boxspring height + mattress height
Unfortunately, those base heights aren’t always explicitly written out, but you can often make an educated guess based on the height of the side rails (just subtract a few inches). When in doubt, I always err on choosing a taller nightstand rather than shorter.
When selecting the combos you’ll see here today, I used a mattress height of 11”, which is fairly average. If you have an extra thick or thin mattress though, be sure to take that into account!
Bed + Nightstand Combos: Upholstered Beds
Pair 1: Curved Upholstered Bed With Wood Frame* + Black Two Drawer Nightstands
There are lots of fabric options available for this bed. I liked the mixed materials as well - the wood base complements the upholstered headboard really nicely. The nightstands are a bit oversized for a queen, but I kind of love the look here since the headboard is so substantial.
Pair 2: Wingback Upholstered Bed + Wood Two Drawer Nightstands
This is the bed we have in our primary bedroom and we love it! Ours is upholstered in their Zuma Pumice Textured Linen fabric (again, lots of fabric options here). I paired it with these clean-lined wood nightstands that offers a nice large drop zone and good storage space. It comes in several finishes as well.
Pair 3: Mixed Material Sling Style Bed + Whitewashed Wood Nightstands
This unique bed is a showstopper! I love the curves and solid wood frame, plus the metal-wrapped corners make it feel extra unique. The gunmetal frame on the whitewashed nightstands echoes that touch. This is a more tonal look, and would make for a very serene bedroom!
Pair 1: Scandinavian Natural Wood Bed + Round White Nightstands
If you like a more modern, minimalist look, this one’s for you! The simple lines on this mid-century/Scandinavian style bed are great and it’s very affordable too. I like the way the shape complements the round nightstands and provides subtle contrast as well.
Pair 2: Black Spindle Bed + Transitional Wood Nightstands
It’s hard to go wrong with a classic spindle bed. This one feels modern and traditional the same time, so you have a lot of options when it comes to choosing nightstands to pair with it. I landed on these wood nightstands with a more traditional hardware style to pull the look in that direction.
Pair 3: Cane Bed + Fluted Wood Nightstands
This is a perfect example of mixing high and low! The bed is definitely more of an investment piece, but if you’re going to splurge, a bed is a good place to do it. The nightstands, on the other hand, are very budget-friendly! Here I chose to play with texture, but keep the tones similar, which makes for a pretty and visually interesting mix.
Happy bed and nightstand hunting, my friends!
