Get the Look: Black & White Feminine Bedroom

Black-and-White-Global-Chic-Bedroom-Get-the-Look-Blog.jpg

Happy Friday, my friends! Who's ready for a new installment of Get the Look? This week I decided to mix things up to create a bedroom design that's a little bit outside of what I would typically gravitate towards - it's all about a high contrast black and white color scheme (ok, and a few touches of gray!) in a style that leans decidedly feminine.

A lot of my design work tends to fall into either the gender neutral or more masculine categories, but I enjoyed the challenge of creating this feminine bedroom. I had a distinct vision in my mind of designing a space for a single gal who's living in an apartment in the city who needed a relaxing, bright, and airy retreat to settle into at the end of a long day. She's a no-nonsense kind of lady, so clutter is a no-no, and she's a big fan of clean-lined, modern furniture, but she also wants it to feel cozy and inviting. Are you catching the vision?

As always, I gathered a few inspiration images to guide my design process - scroll on down to take a look!

Each of these images captures a little bit of what I wanted to create for this week's design, but they're all pretty different, aren't they? They all feel fresh and modern though with some global/boho touches that makes them stand out (in a good way!). I pulled different elements from each one to bring the image I had in my head to life.

Now let's put it all together with the inspiration photos and design!

There are a lot of pieces I love individually in this black and white bedroom, but I'll highlight just a few below...

Let's start with the foundation of this space - the bed! It's hard to see here with the euro shams and decorative pillows in front of it, but that's a white, channel tufted headboard and it's beautiful. It's subtle, but the vertical tufting makes it feel a little more special than your typical upholstered headboard. It comes in several other colors as well, so if white scares you off or isn't the right fit for your bedroom, be sure to check out the other options!

The star of the decorative pillow show is that long lumbar pillow with the wavy cording on the front. It's eye-catching, isn't it? I love the unique design and the contrast it adds to the rest of the bedding.

At the end of the bed, I added a bench, because you know I love a bench in that spot! It's from a new-to-me furniture company called The Inside that I'm now kind of obsessed with. They have a small collection of made-to-order pieces you can upholster in a whole variety of fabrics (patterns and solids) and they ship quickly! The price-point is really great too. The gray and white stripes I chose for this bench bring a little bit of preppy flair, which fits in nicely with the rest of the design!

For a rug, I went with a Moroccan-style shag rug that will be super cozy underfoot. I usually only recommend this type of rug for lower traffic areas and a bedroom definitely fits into that category. Rugs with a higher pile like this one can be hard to vacuum and clean, so just be conscious of that.

Finally, the last thing I want to point out is that fabulous round mirror above the white and brass dresser. It's large and in charge, and definitely feels like a beautiful piece of decor in addition to being super functional. Since it's a true statement piece, I made sure the dresser and table lamp had simpler styles, but could still stand up to the mirror's big personality.

So, what do you think of this bedroom design? Is this style something you'd put in your own home?
