While there are all kinds of hacks for creating cordless lighting out there when you don’t have an outlet nearby or want to avoid hardwiring, I always find that they fall a bit short on function or feel a little flimsy. Well friends, I recently discovered a company that has designed an intentional solution for that - Modern Lantern! They make beautiful, rechargeable battery-powered lamps and sconces that are ready to go wherever you need lighting - no outlet or hardwiring necessary.
These are gamechangers, y’all.
Modern Lantern was kind enough to send me a pair of their Emily cordless wall sconces in antique brass to try out in my home. I love that they don’t require ANY electrical work. All I had to do was mount a small metal bracket on the wall with two screws and slip the sconce over it. It was that simple!
The hardest part was measuring for the right placement and getting them level with one another, but that’s the case whenver you’re trying to hang anything evenly! It makes my inner perfectionist a little crazy, but hey, I made it through! 😉
I decided to put my pair of Emily wall lamps in my office over my storage cabinet. Ever since I set my office up a couple of years ago I’ve wished I had a little more ambient light on darker days and in the evenings. Sconces are a perfect fit since they don’t take up any additional room in this little space; plus, by flanking my mini gallery wall, they add a little more visual “heft” to that long stretch of wall!
I love the simple curved shape of the base paired with the classic drum shade - they work beautifully with the modern coastal vibes in my office. The shades are a tad larger than average at 9” wide, so they truly feel like wall lamps to me.
They’re also fully dimmable using the rotary switch on the base making it easy to set the right level of brightness depending on my needs. Modern Lantern truly has thought of everything!
Here’s a peek at the back of the sconce as well as the wall bracket so you can get a sense for how they work:
On the back of the sconce itself, there’s a little padded area at the top that has a gap underneath. That’s the part that slides over the metal mounting bracket. I know it’s a little hard to see here, but the opening is about an inch down from the top and above the outline of the battery casing.
The rechargeable battery pops out with a finger latch so you can charge it with the provided cord, and then you just snap it back on. It’s now ready to use again!
The LED bulb is as bright as a 50W equivalent, which is great for a little bit of extra lighting (a lot of lamps take a 60W bulb for reference). When you have it on at the brightest level, a full charge lasts 8+ hours, and if it’s fully dimmed, it can last 48+ hours!
It also casts my favorite cozy warmth level - 2700K. That’s my go-to for light bulbs generally too!
Can you tell I’m geeking out a little bit over this clever cordless lighting solution? I think Modern Lantern is really onto something here. Finding well-designed, high quality battery-powered lamps is not an easy thing (you’d be surprised how often I’ve needed just that and haven’t been able to find a good one!) and I’m so glad to be able to add them to my list of resources for my own home as well as for future clients!
