Cozy Modern Nursery Reveal - Version 2.0

Cozy modern nursery with Scandinavian influence. This small bedroom in Richmond, Virginia was transformed into a lovely blue, green, and gray nursery designed by Mix & Match Design Company.

When our son was born back in April, we were living in our little 1200 square foot row home in Philadelphia. We knew we were going to be moving to Richmond, Virginia shortly after he was born, so rather than transform an entire room into a nursery, I carved out a part of my home office for a “nursery nook.” I knew I wanted to have a special place for him to come home to - even if the time there was short!

I also love the challenge of making small spaces work hard, so having an opportunity to make my office pull double duty was super fun. You can see that whole reveal here if you’d like to check it out! Hint: in involves making really good use of the closet!

All that to say, when we moved to Richmond, our little guy got his own “true” nursery, and I’ve had a lot of fun decorating it over the past several months. Today I’m finally sharing an update on how it’s looking! Ready to take a peek?

At about 7’x10’, this room is just big enough for the essentials - a crib, glider, and dresser. Since he really only sleeps and has his diaper changed in here, that’s really all we need! I wanted to stick with the “cozy modern” feel I created in Philadelphia and chose blues and greens as my primary color scheme (mixed in with white, gray, and natural wood too!). There are quite a few different patterns in here, but the similar colors tie it all together. I love how it’s looking so far!

If you’re curious where anything is from in this little room, scroll on down to the bottom. I’ve listed as many sources (or similar pieces) as I can!

The art I hung in here is one of my favorite parts. I found some affordable digital downloads on Etsy and at Juniper Print Shop and had them printed locally at FedEx Office. If you’ve got a tight budget, but need to fill some empty walls, this is a great option. The set of two abstract geometrics fill the space above the crib perfectly, and the mossy oak print that you’ll see in a bit is a great accent above the dresser.

The art above the hook rack is a little bit of a wild card, but I love this piece and felt like it was a fun one for a nursery. It originally belonged to my grandparents and I snagged it after they passed away - it’ll always be a special piece to me. I’ll probably have it reframed one day since the frame and mat aren’t in great shape, but it works for now!

We’ve spent a lot of time on that changing pad on the dresser as well as in the glider. If you’re having a baby or planning a nursery, be sure to get those two things right - they’re essentials! This glider is amazing, especially given the price. It comes with a matching ottoman as well, but I always found myself kicking it around with my foot to be able to sit down (plus, we don’t have a lot of room in here), so I moved it to a little corner so it was out of the way. :)

The dresser is really great too. It’s solid wood and very sturdy, and it comes with those cute leather pulls. It holds everything we need, but doesn’t take up a ton of room either!

Finally, the rug! This is a rug from Ruggable that’s machine washable, stain resistant, and super soft underfoot! It’s on the thin side, but it’s perfect for a nursery given the inevitable spills and messes that come along with having a little human in here all the time. I love the green and off-white southwestern pattern and it was a great finishing touch for this room. It was the last thing I added before shooting this space.

I’m excited at how this room is coming together! I’ve got a few more tweaks I want to make including swapping out a pretty terrible ceiling fan for a light fixture, adding book racks to the wall behind the door, and possibly even painting the walls a deeper color. I’m also trying to figure out a way to add a small lamp or sconce in here so we don’t have to use the overhead lights all the time. It’ll all happen in time though, and I’m really happy with the “done for now” stage we’re in!
