5 Places In Your Home To Decorate With Garland for the Holidays

I feel like I’m a tiny bit obsessed with garland this holiday season and have seen so many great examples of it floating around on my Instagram feed, Pinterest, magazines, etc. No matter if it’s real or faux, simple or intricate, it can be a fantastic way to decorate your home for the Christmas season (inside and out!) and make it feel festive. If you haven’t decorated yet or are looking for some semi-last minute ideas, I’ve got some lovely homes to share with you. I hope that they’ll inspire you to do something similar in your own home. Plus, if you’re going “real” with your garland, there’s an advantage to putting it up now rather than earlier in the season - it’ll still be fresh much closer to Christmas!

I’ve got five spots in the home to share with you that are perfect for garland. Scroll on down to read about them and see examples of each!

(On a side note, if you’re reading this in your email, you may need to click over to the full site to see some of the images below!)

1. Swag garland down the banister

This is one of my very favorite looks. There are SO many incredible examples out there of this idea - it was hard to just pick two! It’s easy to put garland up using ribbons tied to the handrail or, if you want a more subtle look, just use wire that matches your wood or paint color.

2. Make your mantel festive by mixing greenery, beads, and/or lights

If you have a fireplace mantel in your home, it’s almost a requirement to decorate it with garland, isn’t it? (Ok, maybe not a requirement, but a strong recommendation!) If your mantel is deep, you have the option to lay it across the top or swag it. If yours is on the shallow end, swagging it is probably the right call. Either use 3M Command Hooks or tap a couple of small nails into the mantel to secure it.

Mantel garland is also a great spot to mix up your greenery types (throw in some eucalyptus!), add some strands of lights, beads, felt ball garlands, etc. Mantels are often the centerpiece of a room, so do it up big!

3. Frame an interior doorway or opening

There’s something magical about draping a doorway in evergreens - it can really add a special feel to your home for the holidays. It’s actually quick and easy to hang it if your doorway/opening is trimmed out. Just tap a couple of small nails into the top corners of the casing (where you won’t see the holes when you remove the nails later) and use those to anchor your garland.

4. Frame your entry doorway

Don’t leave your front door out! Go big around the door itself or on the frame - it looks beautiful in both places. Take the garland all the way around from top to bottom or make it a little asymmetrical like the images below, respectively.

Hang it around a kitchen window

This is one spot I would highly recommend going faux over real unless you want to constantly fend off bits of evergreen while you’re cooking or cleaning!

If you have adjoining windows (giving you a larger “canvas”), you can swag your garland once or twice like House of Jade did in the first photo below. If you just have a single window, I’d keep it simple - use a smaller garland and have it just frame the window edges like the second photo.
