Get the Look: Coastal California Living Room

Maybe it's because I just got back from a beach vacation last week and summertime is in full swing, but I'm digging coastal-inspired interiors right now - specifically ones with a decidedly California bent. There's a bit more of a clean-lined modern element to the way California does coastal and I'm very, very much a fan. It's casual and super inviting, but it also feels very much pulled together and sophisticated.
My inspiration this week came from a variety of sources including the queen of California coastal design (in my humble opinion!), Amber Lewis. The living room image you see from her in the top right corner in the graphic above was my jumping off point for this Get the Look post. I used it in my epic sofa buying guide blog post from earlier this week too, and since the image was stuck in my mind, I decided to go with it as my inspiration for this design!
To me, the California coastal look has the ultimate light and airy feel to it, but it also stays grounded with touches of black, lighter natural wood tones, and other natural elements like rattan baskets and plants. This style has a pretty neutral color palette overall and the accent colors tend to be on the softer side. For this living room design, I decided to layer in blues and greens over my neutral pieces, and I'm loving how the patterns and textures blend together.
Let's take a closer look at the pieces I chose for this look!

Gray & White Rug | Blue Upholstered Oval Ottoman | Coastal Slipcover Sofa | Gray Modern Chair | Blue Batik Pillow | Gray & White Stripe Lumbar Pillow | Blue Tribal Pillow | Green Block Print Pillow | Whitewash Wood Modern Side Table | Black Modern Floor Lamp | Birds Nest Fern | Framed Blush Tapestry Art | Rattan Basket | Modern Table Lamp
I feel like the coastal look calls for at least one slipcovered piece of furniture and I think this sofa fits the bill quite nicely! This particular one is on the large side, which is perfect for lounging and catching up on your favorite shows. Also, for those of you who are concerned that a light colored sofa would never hold up in your house, don't worry! This one is upholstered in super stain-resistant Crypton fabric. Messy kids and pets welcome. :)
The chairs I paired with it are from West Elm and are super affordable! Since the sofa is a little more of an investment piece, I wanted to balance out the cost with some more budget-friendly chairs. I love the black metal legs on them - I feel like that's a pretty unique touch, and it unites them to the black task floor lamp that's across the way.
I'm really loving the rug I found for this space too. It's patterned, but because the colors in it are very similar, it doesn't feel overly busy. It comes in a bolder black and cream too if that's more your style!
The collection of pillows on the sofa and chairs adds a nice dose of texture and pattern as well. A lot of these are from Etsy, which is one of my favorite sources for pillows, and I love the opportunity to support other small businesses by shopping from them! Definitely give those shops a look if you're hunting for new throw pillows. They've all got great selections.
Finally, I'm slightly obsessed with that blush abstract art above the sofa. It's a large piece, which is great for above this long sofa. It's a high impact piece for a pretty affordable price! It comes framed too so it's ready to hang.
So what do y'all think of the coastal California look? Is this a look you would put in your own home?
