Our Modern Cottage Bathroom Design Plans

If you’re just tuning in, we’re kicking off the renovations of two bathrooms in our house - the kids’ baths! Last week, I shared the before photos of each tiny space and this week, as promised, I’m revealing our design plans. I’m so excited to have fresh new bathrooms for these kids since the existing ones are in very rough shape. Our contractor is estimating about a 6 week project if all goes smoothly, but with a 100 year old house, you never quite know what’s behind the walls. Demo is happening this week, and I’m eager to find out what we’ve got going on back there.

In the meantime, let’s jump into the design plan mood boards!

My daughter is currently 1, but we’ve got a long time horizon on this house, and I want it to be a space that can grow with her over time. To that end, I wanted to make some timeless selections with the tile, vanity, and fixtures, while still making it fun for a little girl to grow up using!

I’ve got a white-on-white theme going on with the permanent pieces - a white vanity sits on top of bone white star and cross floor tiles, and the tub-shower surround will be a white-on-ivory vertical stripe. It’s hard to see in the design board (and it will be subtle), but the stripe might be one of my favorite elements in here. It’s a touch unexpected, but it’s hard to go wrong with a classic stripe.

The other way I’m adding some fun in here is with wallpaper! This Rifle Paper Co. wallpaper was a contender for my daughter’s room in our old house and I was so excited to have an excuse to use it here. The soft floral wallpaper is playful, yet sophisticated at the same time and I think it will stand the test of time for a good while. Knowing it’s fairly easy to change in the future gives us a lot of optionality without changing any of the permanent fixtures.

For metal finish, I’m mixing brass and polished nickel - my favorite combination! My rule of thumb when it comes to mixing metals is to make sure each one is repeated at least twice to look purposeful. Also, don’t mix metals with your plumbing fixtures - they should all be the same and you can change things up elsewhere.

So for my daughter’s room, we’ll have brass in the vanity light fixture, the medicine cabinet frame, and the vanity hardware. We’ll have polished nickel plumbing fixtures and likely the bathroom accessories as well.

Finally, I popped a couple of pieces of art in here too for some additional personality and color! My daughter is obsessed with pointing out birds when we’re out and about, so these two prints from Artfully Walls are a nod to this sweet stage. We’ll see if these make the final cut, but I love them regardless!

My son’s modern cottage bathroom design plan

Onto my son’s bathroom! He’s now six and I’m hopeful that this bathroom will feel classic and timeless for him as he grows up using it. I’ll be using blues and white as the main colors in addition to the metal finishes of polished nickel and brass - just like my daughter’s.

I’ll actually be using some of the same white subway tile in here as well, but laid differently. I’m planning for a classic brick pattern or a horizontal stack for his subway tile. For his floors, we’ll be using a blue mosaic hexagon tile in both the main floor and shower floor. Since it’s such a tiny space, I didn’t want to break up the sight lines across the floor!

I scoured the internet for way longer than I’d like to admit to find the perfect navy vanity for in here. Based on the orientation of the vanity and the adjacent toilet, we needed a 24” vanity with all drawers, which is quite hard to come by at a reasonable pricepoint. I found two contenders and my first choice went out of stock right when I was about to order it - I was so bummed! The runner up is the one you see here, and I do think it’s a good one too, so I’m ok with the outcome! My only complaint is that it has a ceramic top rather than stone or quartz. I’ve decided that if it really bothers me I can always change out the top down the road.

I’ll be using the same shower fixtures in here as my daughter’s bathroom and a slightly different sink faucet. His medicine cabinet will be a frameless one and then I’ll have a brass light fixture above.

One element I’m excited to have in here is a cafe curtain! I like the idea of a little extra pattern and this is a great spot for it. He has one window in there that’s relatively high up, so he doesn’t need a lot of privacy - a cafe curtain is perfect for that application.

Finally, I plan to have some art in here as well, and these pieces are my inspiration. I do love them, but I also want my son to have a say in what he likes, so he’s going to help me pick some out once we get to that stage.

So those are the plans! I’m so excited about the prospect of these renovated bathrooms so that my kids can actually USE the bathrooms attached to their respective bedrooms. Stay tuned for more - particularly on Instagram Stories as I share the progress on these two baths!
