What's on the Horizon for Our Home and Mix & Match in 2023

There’s nothing like a fresh year to get you thinking about setting goals, creating new habits, and planning out the months ahead! I like to spend some time doing this for our home, my business, and family life, and today I thought I’d give you a peek into what’s been percolating in my brain these past couple of weeks.

Over the holidays, my husband and I talked about 2023 as being the first year we’re planning on simply continuing much of what we’ve been doing in the past year, and man, that feels nice. Our “rhythms” of life feel solid, we love where we live, and our professional work is in a good spot. There’s certainly room to grow and evolve, but I’m so grateful for our firm foundation heading into 2023.

Our 2023 Home Projects

My goal for my own home in the coming year is to help it evolve to better serve our stage of life in incremental ways. We don’t have any major projects on our radar, but looking at my list, I am noticing that most areas need some sort of “zhushing,” reorganizing, or simply making a concerted effort to finish that lingering 10-20% to make the room complete.

I find that sitting down with the notes app or pad of paper and doing a big ole brain dump of everything I want to do is really helpful to get it out of my head. It helps me see the big picture and make a plan to check things off the list throughout the year.

For example, a few of the projects on my list for this year are:

  • Finishing our son’s “big boy room” that’s been about 90% complete for a few months (read more about the plan here). I’ll admit, I’ve been dragging my feet a little on this one due to one missing piece - the perfect nightstand. Hopefully it will be here soon, and then I can share the big reveal!

  • Rework our son’s closet. This is a separate project that’s it’s own beast. It’s an awkward space because it has a raised box area that’s part of our stairs, so I really need to think through how to make the usable area work well for his needs. It also has a broken bifold door that keeps coming off of its track, so that needs work too. 🤦‍♀️

  • Hang a gallery wall up our stairway. I’m itching to create an eclectic mix of framed art and photos here. It’s a big blank space that’s just calling for one, and I think this is the year to make it happen!

  • Make our basement playroom into a space we enjoy. I’ve never shared photos of this space because it’s a total hodgepodge. We have a semi-finished basement that we threw together as a playroom so we could have kids play down there when we host a small group for our church, and while it’s functional, it’s really not space we like to hang out in as a family. We need better lighting, toy organization, and it needs to be painted.

The list goes on from there, but I’d say those are the most interesting projects on the horizon, if you know what I mean! I’ll likely share some of those here on the blog and/or on Instagram. What’s Coming for Mix & Match Design Co.

I’m excited for the year ahead with e-design projects, Design Chat (my texting service), and the posts I’ll be putting together for the blog and Instagram. Right now, my work time falls into the hours my son is in preschool and napping, and I try to fit a lot into those 20 or so hours. Outside of that, I’m in mama mode - I’m really grateful to be able to do both!

If you’d like to work with me on a project this year, let’s be in touch! I’d be happy to chat with you about your home and how I can be a part of making it one that you love.

On the blog and Instagram side of things, I’d love to know what would be most helpful to YOU. I’ve got about 15 blog posts I’m planning out so far, but if you have something you’d like to see, I’m all ears. There’s a new post each week, so plenty of space to fill here! I’m planning on having plenty of design tips, a few client project reveals, updates on my own home, and roundups (y’all seemed to really enjoy the one I shared last week about the new Studio McGee collection at Target!)

Lastly, THANK YOU for being here. It means the world to me that you’d set aside some time in your day to catch up on my posts, follow along on Instagram, or work with me one on one. This small business wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for you, so I’m truly grateful. Cheers to a new year!
