Front Door Decor Inspiration for the Holidays

The holiday season is in full swing!

Some of you may have already tied a bow on your Christmas decorating, but maybe some of you are like me and are on the decorate-in-December train. This past weekend, we got our tree, pulled out our ornament boxes, and started to add a little bit of Christmas spirit to our front porch. We’ve got a little ways to go, but it sure is feeling festive now!

Since many of us won’t be seeing the inside of others’ homes this year like we normally would (thanks, COVID!), the outside of our homes has a chance to shine brighter than ever before. So if there was ever a year to do it up, this is it! With that in mind, I thought it would be fun to round up some of my favorite front door holiday decorating ideas.

Going all out doesn’t need to mean tacky lights and inflatable Santas though - it can be subtle and pretty, and still feel totally Christmasy. I tend to choose simplicity and a more minimalist look when I decorate and the ideas I’ll be sharing fall along those lines. Sometimes less is more.

The key in my mind? GREENERY!

Let’s take a peek at some looks I love, shall we?

Whitney nailed it here by surrounding her door with greenery. It feels so simple and classic! She filled this small space with a wreath on the door, cedar garland, and mini trees flanking either side. The abundance of greenery is what makes this door special.

With the thought of keeping things simple, how lovely is this shot from the outside of Chris Loves Julia’s home? Like in Whitney’s home above, two small Christmas trees (in baskets this time!) sit on either side of the front door, making it feel so warm and cozy. The window wreaths with plaid ribbon as hangers are the finishing touch. Super easy and super effective holiday decor.

Another way to put the focus on the front door is by hanging a wreath (or two!) and adding some ribbon and/or bells to gussy it up like Chrissy did here. I also love the way she layered a holiday-themed door mat on top of a small plaid rug. Go for an indoor/outdoor one if you want to replicate this look!

And to add a little sparkle, she put lights on her mini tree. How cute is that? There are tons of short strands of battery powered lights out there these days which would be perfect for this idea.

If you want to create a look that’s a little more unique, but still feels simple, try an asymmetrical garland around your front door! I love the look of this mixed garland (I think I spot cedar and fir here) draped around the frame. To balance out the garland, the folks from Laine & Layne added a Norfolk pine and some firewood to the other side.

My final idea for your front door holiday decor is to go with a more organic, free form look with a bunch of tiny trees! The Merrythought house looks fab with a smattering of fir trees surrounding its front door. I kind of love that it’s perfectly imperfect - different sized trees in a variety of containers gives it that “collected over time” feel.

So, what stuck out to you here? Any ideas you’ll be taking for your own home this holiday season?
