Shop the Room: Clean-Lined Coastal Bedroom

Welcome to this month’s Shop the Room post!

Lately I’ve been dreaming of warmer days and trips to the beach, which then had me thinking about coastal design styles…the light and airy nature of it and the relaxed vibes it brings. I set out to design a coastal bedroom this month with a clean-lined twist to it. You won’t find any nautical themes here, but it there’s a nod to that look with some weathered woods and woven texture, along with blue, green, and white tones.

You certainly don’t have to live by the beach to bring this style into your home though! What I like about a modern coastal look is that it feels like a “middle of the plate” style that works in many different homes.

Let’s take a closer look at what makes this room the beauty that it is!

The Furniture and Layout

When I designed this room, I was imagining it to be a pretty average size to house a queen bed, a pair of nightstands, and a nice sized dresser. (Psst! If you like this design, but have a larger bedroom, you could opt for a king size bed and add a reading chair in a corner to fill the space.) I mixed in some more investment pieces with budget-friendly finds to create a nice balance of high/low.

For the bed, I chose a fully upholstered frame with a “French seam” style headboard. That means that it has an extra wide hemmed area along the edges. This gives it a casual, almost slipcovered look that feels right at home in this coastal bedroom.

The nightstands and table lamps on either side definitely have a modern look to them, but the weathered look of the tables mix in that earthy, beachy theme. I love the edge pulls on the nightstands too. Don’t they look sleek?

I included an end-of-bed bench here with a caned seat (I know it’s a little hard to see!) - I love the texture of it and the bentwood base feels so classic!

The dresser and round mirror combo lean more modern, but the curves blend right into the the curves I repeated in other areas of the room. All together, it has a clean, but cozy feel to it!

The Color Scheme

You can’t have a coastal-inspired room without using some blue and white! A mix of different shades keeps your eye moving around the room, and a few touches of black keep the room grounded. A little bit of green here and there adds to the natural, organic look as well.

I stuck with one metal finish in here - brass. I love the warmth it adds as well as how it ups the modern glam feel.

The Decor

I kept it pretty simple in terms of decor in here. If I was designing for a client, I’d want to add some additional personal touches like a set of framed family photos - a bedroom is a great spot for those.

I did choose one standout piece of abstract landscape art for above the bed though, and I just love how it transports you to a gorgeous view of the water from high above! I wonder what inspired this piece - I’m thinking maybe it’s somewhere out west in the mountains? Wherever it was, I’d like to go take in that view! Wouldn’t you?
