Welcome to this month’s Shop the Room post!

I recently designed a dining room for a client who was thinking about using wallpaper for the upper part of her walls and I was on board 100%! I love using wallpaper in a dining room, especially if there’s wainscoting, board and batten, or even a simple chair rail. Not papering the whole wall gives you the look and impact of wallpaper, but isn’t overwhelming either. It’s such a good mix.

We ended up going a different direction and just painting the walls instead, but I couldn’t get the wallpapered dining room out of my mind, so y’all get one instead for this month’s Shop the Room look!

The style here is definitely a blend of modern, coastal, and transitional - with an emphasis on modern, clean lined pieces. It feels like a fun dining room, doesn’t it? I like that it doesn’t take itself too seriously, but is still “formal” enough to host a great dinner party.

The Furniture and Layout

This dining room was made to entertain. I wanted to be able to seat eight people comfortably with the option to go bigger when needed. This extension dining table allows for just that! Of course you always want to make sure you have enough space for a table this long, especially with the leaves. Ideally that means 3-4’ from the edge of the table to the wall or adjacent furniture. I do think you can get away with less when it’s extended as long as that size is the exception, rather than the norm.

The eye-catching credenza behind the dining table is both great for storage and serving. Whether it’s housing drinks or food, it’s awesome to have a good size surface in a dining room for those things. You can always move the table lamp too if you need more surface space.

The Color Scheme

I wanted to keep things lighter and airier in here, so I chose lighter-toned woods and white dining chairs, and kept things pretty neutral throughout. The rest of the room plays off of that neutral color palette, but the patterns and textures keep your eye moving and add visual interest. The wallpaper is a greige wave motif, which definitely adds some movement!

The Decor

Dining rooms don’t tend to need a lot of decor, so I like to keep it simple. A plant you can keep in the middle of the table is a great option for an easy, everyday look, and that can be swapped out for other pieces depending on the occasion. The other item is, of course, art! Every room needs some. 😉 I loved this abstract beachy art - it’s a fun, modern take on a beach scene that doesn’t feel too thematic.
