Designing a Fun Powder Room - Two Ways

If there’s one space to take a few design risks in your home, it’s a powder room! These are often one of the smallest rooms in the house, they offer an opportunity to go big, use unusual materials, or experiment with a new color. Think outside the box and don’t be afraid to try something new! Since they’re often shared by guests too, it can be a fun conversation starter. :)

I’ve found myself designing several bathrooms for e-design clients lately, and since I’m on a roll, I thought I’d design some as inspiration for y’all too!

I created two different takes on a green half bath. I feel like green is having a moment in the design world and it’s a color I’ve been gravitating toward lately too. I tried to push myself with both of these while staying true to my usual modern traditional style.

So let’s get into it! And then at the end, I’d love to know which design caught your eye!

Wallpapered Modern Traditional Powder Room

My first half bath design has a bold choice on almost everywhere you look. I wasn’t kidding when I said go big! Greenery-inspired wallpaper, patterned floor tile, a gorgeous marble and brass mirror, and deep navy vanity each make a statement, but it all works together quite nicely I think!

That wallpaper is from a company called Love vs. Design, which allows you to customize the colors right on their site! I chose to give it kind of a tone-on-tone look with two different sage greens (Sterling for the background and Salt for the foliage). This pattern reminds me of a William Morris design (if you’re familiar with his work) - it feels almost vintage, but modern at the same time.

The floor tile has the look of encaustic tile, but it’s hard-wearing porcelain. It’s super affordable too! That star pattern has been on my list to use for a long time - I’m glad I finally found a spot for it!

The navy vanity with a brass faucet fixture and hardware is such a good combo. The brass continues up through that stunning marble framed mirror and into the modern vanity light fixture. The mirror is a bit of a splurge, but man, it’s pretty.

All together, this powder room design feels a little glam and special, but would still fit really well next to a lot of different decorating styles.

Tiled Modern Traditional Powder Room

This design admittedly leans a little more on the modern side with touches of traditional. The boldest choice in here is probably a tie between the green stacked tile and that octagonal bone inlay mirror.

I used a similar tile in a client design recently and shared it on Instagram Stories, and wow, y’all went crazy for it! It’s such a pretty tile with a lot of color variation. This one has a matte finish, which along with the layout, gives it that more modern feel. The marble hexagon floor tile is a classic choice that can have that traditional look, but paired with the wall tile, actually skews modern too. It’s hard to go wrong with a marble hex!

You’ve got to click over to see that mirror in more detail - the black teardrop shaped accents are just perfection! It works really nicely with the black hardware and faucet too.

The white vanity and wall sconces with tapered shades (and tiny brass accents!) give it a clean, fresh feel and offer a place for your eye to rest. Sometimes you need that when you have some bolder choices in other areas!
