Creating a Plant Wall with Modern Botanical's Planters
Modern Botanical graciously sent me a set of their planters to try out in my home. All of the opinions expressed here are fully my own. I only share products I love and believe in! If y’all have been here around for any length of time, you know I have a love affair with house plants! I’ve grown quite a collection over the years, and I’ve found that plants tend to thrive in my office. It’s becoming a bit of a jungle in here, but in a good way. 😉
I think plants make for really great home decor - they’re a perfect finishing touch for a room that needs a little bit of an organic, natural element to it. If you haven’t attempted adding a live plant or two to your home, I’d encourage you to give it a go!
One thing I’ve always wanted to try is to grow plants in water. I’ve propagated a few plants that way, but to “plant” them in water feels like a different proposition. Enter Modern Botanical - they’ve created planters specifically designed to do just that, and they look good on your wall to boot.
Each hardwood frame is handmade in San Diego with all natural finishing products, and the quality shows. They’re thoughtfully designed using a mix of lighter and darker woods with a cork base for the glass planter to sit on. And, they’ve made it incredibly easy to hang them on the wall using the included template for the nails. I think it took me about five minutes total to hang all three of mine!
Modern Botanical sent me their Shasta Wall Set and I couldn’t want to take a few clippings from my plant collection to grow in water.
First up, for my double planter, I grabbed two different kinds of Pothos clippings - “Pearls and Jade” (nearest to the front), and “Neon.” These might be one of the easiest plants to grow in the world, and mine have sprouted some pretty long vines! It was high time to give them a bit of a haircut and give the clippings a new home.
Next up, a cutting from my increasingly-giant Pilea peperomioides. This guy puts off baby plants like nobody’s business. It’s been so fun to watch. I’ve successfully propagated a bunch of these and given them away to friends, so I think it’ll do great in water! I cut this one off as close to the soil as I could, which left a nice stem to put in the glass vial.
Finally, the grandest experiment of all - an Audrey Ficus. I bought a small one of these at Trader Joe’s awhile back and it’s been doing well, but I’d like it to branch so I don’t end up with one giant, unwieldy trunk with leaves sprouting off of it.
Houseplants often won’t do this naturally, so it needed a bit of a nudge…in the form chopping off the growth tip. Yikes! It may not look pretty for awhile, but it should encourage branching below the cut. We’ll see what happens! In the meantime, I’m going to try to get the top to root in water in one of the new planters.
(Side note: I shared my brave chopping on Instagram if you’d like to see what that process looked like!)
Here’s how they turned out on the wall! I gave them a little bit of space in case I end up with taller plants growing here down the road, but they’re looking pretty lovely here on day one. I’ll be sure to track their progress and share it with you over on Instagram as time goes on.
