We’re wrapping up our long-awaited tiny kids’ bathroom renovations in our 100 year old house in Richmond, Virginia, and I cannot wait to share the full reveals soon! We’re at that 90% complete stage where the construction is done, but we’ve got a few final to-dos to check off in order to truly call them finished.
Since it’s going to take us a minute to do those and I don’t want to leave you hanging until they’re totally complete, I thought I’d use this opportunity to share some sneak peeks by way of reviewing some of the purchases we made through Wayfair!
Over the years of working with my e-design clients, I’ve had to find good online sources for renovation materials like tile and plumbing fixtures that can be shipped anywhere. One of my go-tos is Wayfair! You may not think of them as a source for that category, but I’ve found that they truly do have just about everything you’d need for all kinds of projects. And with their generous fast and free shipping (even on heavy materials like tile!), it’s hard to beat the convenience.
If you’re just tuning into this project, here’s the quick backstory on these two bathrooms!
After moving into our new-to-us house, we quickly realized the two bathrooms our kids would be using were in worse shape than we thought, which meant a full gut job for both. These 5’x7.5’ bathrooms got a full makeover, including new plumbing and electrical. We converted my son’s tub into a standup shower and my daughter got a new, low-profile tub that will allow it to act more like a shower one day when she’s older. You can see all the before photos here and below are the plans I shared at the start of the project!
The Modern Cottage Bathroom Design Plans
The end result turned out to be very close to the design I drew up! I can’t wait to put the finishing touches on these spaces like hanging art and adding wallpaper to my daughter’s bathroom, but those will come with time.
Now let’s get into what I purchased from Wayfair. What I love about ordering from them is that you can shop SO many amazing and high quality brands I love on their site with the ease of adding them all to one cart to order. When you’re placing a big order for a renovation, anything that simplifies things is a gift.
Let’s start with my daughter’s bathroom - here’s what I got from Wayfair:
Delta In2ition Multifunction Dual Shower Head in Polished Nickel
Delta Cassidy Tub Spout in Polished Nickel
And here’s what we got for my son’s:
Delta In2ition Multifunction Dual Shower Head in Polished Nickel
Signature Hardware Pendleton Single Hole Faucet in Polished Nickel
It knocked so much off of my list! This doesn’t even include things like the rough-in valves, shower arms, flanges, etc. that I also sourced from there.
Now let’s take a more in depth look at my daughter’s bathroom so I can talk about some of these in more detail.
My Daughter’s Modern Cottage Bathroom
The star of the show at the moment is definitely the striped tub/shower walls I created with a mix of white and ivory subway tiles! I’ve had this vision for so long and it’s such a treat to see it come to life. Before I committed to this idea, I ordered samples of each tile to make sure the colors were right. I always recommend this before making a big purchase like tile!
I laid them in a vertical stack so that the edges all align and put the focus on creating the stripe. Using different colors of the same tile worked out perfectly. It definitely brings in that modern cottage vibe I was going for.
For fixtures, I am absolutely in love with this shower head! I really wanted to keep things simple, but still have a handheld shower option for rinsing little heads and cleaning the tub/shower, so this all-in-one fit the bill. It even has a sprayer on the end of the handheld piece for extra power! It pairs nicely with the Cassidy tub spout as well.
One swap I need to make is on the tub overflow and drain. We had a little miscommunication with the plumber on that one and ended up with a chrome finish for both. It drives me crazy, but I’ll swap it eventually so it matches the polished nickel we have everywhere else.
Moving over to the vanity area, we maxed out this little space as best we could with this 24” vanity. It’s so solid and has great features like soft close doors and a nice size drawer on the bottom (it’s tall enough to hold a roll of toilet paper - just barely!). The quartz top makes for a durable counter and I like that it has just a single hole for a faucet. That means more counter space without extra handles! One thing I will change is the hardware. It’s not bad, but it’s not exactly the look I want. I love that hardware is such an easy customization option. Keep that in mind when you’re shopping for a bathroom vanity. It’s a budget friendly update that can really make a difference.
For the faucet, I used the Beasley from Signature Hardware in another bathroom project for my parents and knew I wanted to use it again. It has such pretty details and the quality is excellent. I love the warmth of it in polished nickel - it works seamlessly with the shower fixtures from Delta.
My Son’s Modern Traditional Bathroom
My hope for this bathroom was that it would feel classic, yet modern, and I think it turned out to be just that with its mix of different shades of blue and white! He’s six and it was so fun to share this process with him as we designed and renovated his bathroom. He loves how it turned out and is a big fan of his new shower! The old cast iron tub he had in there didn’t even have a real shower head, so this is quite an upgrade.
I used a slightly more masculine style bathroom faucet for his vanity (Pendleton from Signature Hardware), which again maximizes counter space in this little bathroom. He has a 24” vanity as well with a single hole in the countertop. I felt confident buying two faucets from this brand since I’ve loved them so much in other projects. They’re a great balance of price and quality. When it comes to bathroom fixtures, I look for solid brass to make sure the quality is there!
Think that tile looks familiar? It’s actually the same white tile we used in my daughter’s bathroom! We laid it in a classic brick pattern so it feels totally different, but it’s fun that they share that in common. We used the same shower head as well since it needed to serve the same purpose. Again, big fan! My son has given it his full approval and loves to stand under the stream.
Our tile guys did such a nice job here - I love the crisp edge of the tile here. It gives it that slightly modern flair. We added two hooks next to his shower for towels. There’s just enough wall space in this tiny bathroom for those!
I’m so happy with how both of these bathrooms turned out functionally as well as aesthetically. Working within a small footprint definitely poses its challenges, but we made the most of what we had.
The Convenience of Wayfair
Being a working mom, I LOVE anything that streamlines my life, and for this project, Wayfair made it possible to hit “add to cart” to so many pieces for these bathroom renovations! I don’t give these accolades lightly - I’ve used Wayfair for years for design clients and my own home, and appreciate how much they offer under one roof. Their fast and free shipping meant that I had everything I needed in my house, ready for the contractors and tradespeople when they needed them.
It’s been so exciting to start using these bathrooms and move everyone out of our primary bathroom! Checking this project off of our list has been huge for updating this 100 year old house and giving her new life. More to come on the big reveal soon!
