Hunting For Modern Cottage Art At Wayfair

I recently shared an empty house tour of the first floor of our new home (catch up here if you missed it!) and one big difference between it and our prior home is the number of WALLS!
Our last house had a very open floor plan with lots of windows on the first floor, which meant we had very little wall space for art. The new house, by contrast, has lots of defined rooms, which means more spots for art! Though I have a little stash of pieces that we didn’t have a spot for in the old house, a lot of them are small, so I’m excited about hunting for some new pieces for this home.
One place I’m excited to find a new piece for is over my grandmother’s antique jelly cupboard. It’s one of my very favorite family pieces and is a big inspiration for the “modern cottage” style I plan to bring into this home. If you’ve been around for awhile, you might remember it sat under a window in our old house:
It has found a home in our living room in the new house and it’s just begging for a big piece of art above it. When you look into this room from the front door, you see it immediately ahead of you, so it’s a great spot for an eye-catching piece.
Look at all that open wall above it!
When I’m working with interior design clients, I’m always talking to them about finding art that speaks to them. I know it sounds a little silly, but it’s true! You know that feeling when you see a painting that just grabs you and pulls you in? That’s what I’m talking about. Pay attention to a piece when it evokes that kind of feeling.
So where can you find art that speaks to you? Lots of places! You can of course hunt locally at galleries or antique stores, and there are also a wealth of online sources. Art can be expensive, but it also doesn’t have to be. You can find amazing art prints you love at very affordable prices.
One of the places I look for art is at Wayfair. They have a huge catalog of art in all kinds of genres and styles in a wide range of price points. To narrow your search, I like to start by putting in some search terms like “abstract landscape” or “coastal abstract art” and see what comes up. When you find a piece you like, click it and if it’s not exactly what you want, scroll down to the section titled “Compare Similar Items” and you’ll see pieces that are, you guessed it, similar!
Another cool thing about Wayfair is that they carry art prints and canvases from individual artists. You’ll see a credit to the artist in the title if that’s the case! I love being able to support an artist by purchasing their prints from a larger retailer. A few favorites on Wayfair you’ll want to check out are:
Isabelle Z
Emma Scarvey
June Erica Vess
Now back to my vintage chest that’s begging for art!
I’m a super visual person, so I decided to kick off my search for a piece of art on Wayfair and try out a few different ones. I came up with five candidates that I really like and I Photoshopped them into a photo of the jelly cupboard. Photoshop is my jam for creating mockups, but you can also do this with Canva or Google Slides if you want to see how a piece might look in your home!
In these mockups, you’ll also see I did a little bit of styling to see what it would look like with some other pieces I already have. I actually picked up this lamp on the right with the scalloped shade from Wayfair as well and I just love how it brings in that modern cottage vibe to this little corner.
Then on the left I added one of my pothos plants, a vintage brass duck, and this cutie footed bowl. A friend recently gave that to me as a housewarming gift and you can find it on Wayfair as well! So many goodies over there.
Let’s jump into the five pieces of art I tried out! I’d love to hear what you like in the comments - chime in with your favorite!
1. Green Abstract Landscape
This one by Isabelle Z caught my eye for its bold green color and abstract style. It carries you off into the distance and really makes you feel like you’re in a beautiful marshy coastal waterway! I liked its simplicity as well.
2. Cumulus Cloud Landscape
Fun fact: I already own this piece from Wayfair! I purchased it several years ago and it might be a candidate for this spot now. It’s a great size and the colors are really fantastic. It’s by Emma Scarvey.
3. Dark Abstract Landscape
I’m digging a little more saturation with this piece here. Abstract landscapes come in so many shapes and sizes, and I loved the boldness of this one. It feels very natural and definitely has that modern cottage vibe. This is definitely a frontrunner for me.
4. Vintage Barn Landscape
Changing it up here with this abstract barn! I grew up riding horses until I went to college, so barns hold a lot of good memories for me. This was a pick for nostalgia! The colors feel a little more subtle and soft. I think it’s a candidate for sure.
5. Light Vertical Landscape
Lastly, I wanted to try a portrait orientation above this piece. I do like how it draws your eye up a little further to the ceilings (ours are 10’). It has an almost ethereal feel to it with the washed out colors.
