Modern Cottage Nursery/Guest Room Reveal

It’s reveal day! I’m so excited to finally share our dual-purpose nursery/guest room. Our daughter was born in December and it was about 80% done when she arrived, but it took awhile to put the last touches on it! Since she does most of her sleeping in her room, it was tricky to find that perfect window of time to finish it up and photograph it. 😅 I finally grabbed some photos last week and can’t wait to share it with you today.

You can find all the sources at the very end of the post!

If you’ve been following along, you’ll know that this room used to be a dedicated guest room and we wanted to preserve that function when it became baby girl’s nursery. It’s not a particularly large room, so it took some creativity to come up a space plan that could be both! You can see the layout here if that’s helpful context.

I designed her room with a “modern cottage” vibe that has some sweet elements for a nursery, but still feels grown up enough for adults when they use the room. Here’s what the design board looked like:

And here’s how it turned out in real life!

I’ll start with the bed side of the room:

We landed with the bed up against the windows to make sure we had space for a dresser and the crib, and I’m happy with how it turned out. In case you’re wondering, yes, it’s totally ok from a design perspective to put a bed in front of the windows if it’s best for flow!

I got that cute vintage turned wood headboard for free in our neighborhood’s Buy Nothing group - can you believe that? It took some finagling to get it attached to our tall platform base since the legs weren’t very long, but thankfully I figured out a way to do it that involved screws and zip ties! It’s not going anywhere.

The extra long blue striped bed skirt was one of my favorite finds for this space. There aren’t a lot of great 18” long bed skirt options out there so I feel like I really lucked out with this one! The blue ties in really well with the blues in the rug, which we kept from the room’s previous design.

To continue tie the bed into the colors of the rug, I added two new cranberry block print throw pillows along with a neutral patterned lumbar. Red isn’t a color I’ve used much in my design work, so it was fun to stretch myself a bit and use it here in its toned-down cousin!

I added some beige curtains for softness and to block out some light (oh so important for babies!). I went custom for these with Two Pages curtains and I’m so glad I did. Having them arrive in the perfect length and ready to hang made my job so much easier.

(As an aside, here’s a quick curtain hanging tip to make sure yours hit at just the right spot: hang your curtains on the rods first and then hold the rods up on the wall so that the curtains just kiss the floor. No measuring needed if you’ve ordered the right length! It helps to have another person to do this with you.)

To finish off this space, I kept the nightstands that belonged to my grandmother and added a pair of affordable white table lamps - these are great for the price. I’m really pleased with them.

Now turning to the side that has my very favorite piece - the dresser! I’m totally in love with the scalloped front of this dresser. The drawers are deep and hold SO MUCH. From baby clothes to extra wipes to swaddle blankets, it’s all packed in here. It’s not quite ivory - it has a little more brown to it - and has just enough contrast with the white walls. It also doubles as a changing station for this phase of life. I’m hopeful it’ll be a dresser she’ll have for many years to come.

Then across from the bed is the crib! This is the same one (along with the glider) we used for our son - I was glad it was gender neutral! All we needed was a mauve pink crib sheet and called it a day.

The star of the show here is definitely the wallpaper though! This floral wallpaper was the perfect modern cottage element that feels so sweet and perfect for a baby girl. It has blue, straw, ivory, dusty mauve, and yellow in it. It’s surprisingly hard to photograph, but you can see a closer image of it below that’s pretty true to its colors in real life!

All in all, I’m really happy with the way this shared space has turned out. I’d love to add one more piece of decor above the crib, but am choosing to be patient and waiting to find just the right thing. :) We’ve spend many, many hours in here already, and it makes me smile every time I walk in the room. Most of all, I’m so grateful baby girl is here and I am excited for her to enjoy her little bedroom for many years to come!
