Coastal Modern Inspiration For Our Kitchen Renovation

via Our Coastal Modern Kitchen Refresh Reveal

A few weeks ago, I shared that we’re embarking on a major renovation in our house this summer that will include a brand new kitchen! Catch up on that post first if you haven’t had a chance to read it yet.

Today I’m diving into the inspiration for how I want the kitchen to look and feel. I’ve been collecting inspiration for this house since we bought it a little over a year ago and I think I have a pretty clear idea of what I want for it. It’s been so fun to dream about this one since this is our hopeful forever home. It’s a place we’re excited to invest in and make exactly what we want. It’s a privilege I don’t take lightly and am grateful we have the opportunity to take on this renovation.

Truth be told, I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to the kitchen in our old home (the image up top) - at least the way it looked! We gave this builder-grade kitchen a mini makeover a couple of years after we moved in (without changing the cabinets!) and I still love the color palette we chose and the selections we made for that space. It’s still in the back of my mind as a big point of inspiration for our new kitchen.

Before we jump into the inspiration photos, here’s a quick rundown of what I want for this kitchen:

  • Color scheme: The perimeter cabinets painted in BM Pale Oak and the island in SW Breezy with medium toned brown hardwood floors.

  • Cabinetry: Inset with shaker style drawer fronts that have a small cove molding detail to them.

  • Metal finishes: The knobs, pulls, and lighting will be satin brass; the plumbing fixtures will be polished nickel We’ll have stainless steel appliances.

  • Countertops: This is still up in the air, but it’ll be a marble with soft veining in warm grays and beiges! We’re on the hunt for the perfect one, but I’m a big fan of Imperial Danby and Mystery White as a starting point.

So keep an eye out for those elements as I share a few more details about what the inspiration photos bring out for our own kitchen!

There’s so much to love about this kitchen. We’ll have a 48” range flanked by cabinetry (albeit a narrower set on either side) and a hood above that’s very similar to this one with the simple curved front.

We’re also planning to have the marble run up the backsplash as shown here.

The colors and tones in the kitchen above hit just about every note to me. It’s subtle, but the details like the knob placement and cabinetry color (looks very similar to Pale Oak to me!) are just right.

If you want to drool over a tour of a pretty kitchen, this is a good one! That link will take you to all the photos. This kitchen was a solid source of inspiration for the cabinetry profile I’m going for in ours. Can you see the subtle curve on the inner edge of the rails and stiles? Lovely.

This kitchen with the blue island stopped me in my tracks! It was very affirming that I wanted to go the direction of an island in a contrasting color to bring more visual interest to the space. I love a tonal kitchen, but the blue island just brings it up a notch for me. I also really like the turned legs - it’s a great detail that makes this space feel even more custom.

This image shows a great peek into not one, but two details from my wishlist we’re including in this kitchen: an appliance garage and a corner bookshelf! One of our goals is to have very little that lives on our countertops on a daily basis and being able to hide away small appliances is a big key to that.

We’ll have a cabinet that rests on the countertop that’s pretty similar to this one (minus the two small drawers on the bottom) with retracting pocket doors. It’ll house a coffee/tea station on the bottom and our microwave on one of the upper shelves.

The corner shelves are going to be a great spot to store cookbooks and display a few pretty pieces. I’m also hoping to create a hidden charging station on the bottom so we can have a home for all those little electronics we charge all the time!

The last fun element we were able to squeeze in was the wet bar with a beverage fridge! It’ll be off on its own a little bit - closer to the family room side of the space, which I think will work well for when we entertain. Having a separate fridge from the main one will relieve a lot of space issues we have with all the beverages we drink!

It’ll have a little prep sink as well, which is something we’ve never had in our own house, but my parents have one at their house and I was hopeful we’d find a way to put one in here. We’re moving a door to make it happen, but I think it’ll be worth it.

I’ll wrap there for today! I hope that you enjoyed a peek into my brain on what I’m thinking about for this part of our renovation. I’ve got lots more to share as well on our family room ideas, as well as the mudroom and powder room updates. Stay tuned for those soon!
