Mini Mudroom Update | Small Changes, Big Impact

One big improvement from our old house to the new one is a dedicated mudroom! We’ve already reaped the benefits of this addition during the messy, wet Virginia winter we’ve had this year. To be able to come in the back door and drop shoes, bags, and coats in one place that’s not cluttering up the front door area is dreamy. It’s the little things, isn’t it?

I hope to be able to add cabinetry, hooks, and proper storage down the road, but in the meantime, we were desperate for some functional hanging space, as well as a place to dry off our feet when we came in the door. We’d been using a couple of hooks on the back of the door that the previous owners left for coats, but things pile up there fast and our 5 year old son couldn’t reach them on his own, so his coats just ended up on the floor. We weren’t setting him up for success!

So what did I do for a quick solution? Popped over to Wayfair to see what they had to solve this problem! Sometimes it’s nice to be able to add a few items to one cart and have them all delivered to your door when you’re trying to get settled in a new home.

For coats, I’ve been loving the look and function of peg rails recently (hello “modern cottage” perfection!) and I found the perfect one that can sit end-to-end to create a longer set to fill this small wall of the mudroom. It gives us a total of eight hooks across 43” of space, which is wonderfully efficient, yet spacious, for our family of four. I also liked the look of this peg rail coat rack that comes in a variety of lengths. I wanted pegs with round ends, but that one is great too!

Since Virginia sees all four seasons pretty equally during the year (and sometimes we see wild fluctuations in temps in a given week!), I find that each of us needs to keep at least two different jackets handy all the time.

I loved the natural finish of these peg rails. Eventually we’ll paint the walls in here, but I know this wood tone will work with anything we decide style-wise.

I also added this machine-washable rug to act as a doormat by the back door. The fact that I can tell people to wipe their feet on it and not worry about it is perfect. It’s low profile so the door swings over it easily and it has non-slip backing so it won’t slide all over the floor (one of my pet peeves with small rugs!).

Apart from choosing something functional, I had to consider the style as well since we’ve got a very busy tile to contend with in here. The bold geometric isn’t exactly my style, but it’s what we inherited, so we’re working with it for now!

Here’s a little design tip for you when you’re mixing patterns: if you have a very structured pattern, mix it with something more organic to soften the edges and not have it compete.

The Persian-meets-Southwestern design of this rug was just right. I loved the pops of pink and blue too! I also considered a few other machine washable, performance rug options that I’ll link below if you’re looking for something similar:

Finally, I added a traditional-style frame to my Wayfair cart (they really do have just about everything you need for your home!) for a print I already had. The worn gold finish with the tiny bead detail + the abstract landscape gave this spot a little more of a collected look along with color.

I’m loving how functional and pretty this spot has become with just a few small changes and the addition of some affordable pieces from Wayfair! It only took about $150 and one small wall to make this space work beautifully for our family. I hope this inspires you to create a functional drop zone, even if you only have a single wall to work with!
