My Favorite Blue Paint Colors

Kitchen island in Sherwin Williams Breezy paint color

Y’all seem to have loved my post on my favorite light neutral paint colors, so I’m back with a new round - blues!

I’ve also covered how I choose paint colors, which is a good post on paint strategy because let’s be honest, picking colors can be tricky! So head on over there if you’d like some general advice.

Now I feel like I have to share the disclaimer that paint colors look different in every room, so even if you spy one that you really love here or in an inspiration image on Pinterest, always, always, get a sample. See how it looks in your own home at different times of the day and under different lighting conditions.

My best paint color sample hack that will save you time and a trip to the paint store (and avoid having a million tiny sample pots laying around) is to order 12”x12” sample sheets from Samplize. They use real paint on peel-and-stick paper so you’ll get an accurate representation of what the color looks like.

They carry colors from four popular paint brands:

  • Sherwin Williams

  • Benjamin Moore

  • PPG

  • Farrow & Ball

One final note before we jump into the paint colors themselves - always make sure you include the brand name when you search for a paint color. A lot of brands have very similar names for their colors (or even the exact same ones) and it would be such a painful mistake to accidentally get one when you meant to get the other!

Also, it’s a good idea to spell out the name and/or have the paint number as a double check. I once ordered what I thought was a sample of Wales Gray and ended up with Whale Gray! Needless to say, they were not the same. 🙈

Now let’s dive into some of my favorite blue paint colors!

BM Boothbay Gray

Don’t be fooled by the “gray” in this paint color’s name. It definitely has a blue tint to it, and it’s beautiful. I had a client paint an entire room - trim, built-ins, and walls - this shade and it turned out so handsome. It’s the perfect blend of moody and tailored.

SW Breezy

This is what I recently painted my kitchen island and I’m obsessed. I labored over what paint color to use there and I landed on this one (you can see an image of it at the top of this post and see the full reveal here) that has a touch of gray in it, but is definitely a blue.

BM Van Courtland Blue

If you’re looking for a slightly deeper hue, but one that’s not too in-your-face, Water’s Edge is a good one. In some lights it may read a little green, so be aware of that!

BM Brittany Blue

This one is new to me, but I saw a few examples of it recently and it’s a great barely-there light blue. It would work really nicely in a coastal home or in a space where you want some subtle color as a backdrop.

SW Topsail

I’m dying to use this in a bathroom. It reminds me of SW Sea Salt, but less green. It has those soothing blue-gray tones that work so well in a bathroom to make it feel spa-like. I’d love to see it paired with some marble tile. 😍

BM Van Deusen Blue

If you’re on the hunt for a medium, slightly moody blue, this may be the perfect fit. I’d like to see this in an office, basement lounge, or as a cabinet color for something a little different.

BM Phillipsburg Blue

This one falls into a similar category as Van Deusen Blue. It’s an excellent cabinetry color for built-ins or a kitchen, or it could be a pretty front door color as well if you have a white or red brick house!

SW Lullaby

This is another barely-there blue. It’s a great bedroom color that doesn’t feel like it has to belong in a baby boy’s nursery. Depending on your light, it might have a tad of green in it, making it lean a little more aqua.

BM Denim Wash

Maybe my most true medium blue on the list, I had to throw in a little bit of a wild card! I saw this on a front door and just fell in love. It’s a little more fun and playful. I’d be cautious with this one, but in the right circumstance, it might be the perfect shade!

BM Silver Mist

A grayer, cool blue that I’d use in a room with southern exposure; otherwise, it might feel a little cold. It adds just a bit of color and could be used in tons of spaces. It might even be one of those “whole house colors” if you like a cooler shade.

BM Coventry Gray

The grayest of the bunch, this one might be classified as a gray with a blue undertone. I like it as a neutral and, like Silver Mist, is really versatile.

BM Hale Navy

Maybe the OG of navy paint colors? It’s hard to go wrong with this one. I love a tried and true navy, and this one works beautifully as a kitchen cabinet color as well as a wall color.

That wraps things up for some of the best blue paint colors! Consider these little paint swatches a starting point. They’ll look different on the screen than they will in real life, so if you see something close to what you’re looking for, order a sample and see how it looks in your own home!
